The short answer is yes, and the interesting part is why the question keeps getting asked.
Google has said the same thing since 2023. Large-scale data supports it. And yet every few months another wave of articles claims Google is quietly demoting AI content — usually published by companies selling AI detection or "humanizing" services.
So let's separate what Google actually says, what the data shows, and what genuinely predicts whether a page performs.
The short version
Google's position: it focuses on the quality of content rather than how content is produced. There's no AI penalty in the ranking systems. This has been stated consistently since 2023 and hasn't changed.
The data: Ahrefs analysed 600,000 pages and found 86.5% of top-ranking pages contained some level of AI-assisted content, with a correlation between AI content and ranking position of 0.011 — effectively zero. Purely human-written pages made up only about 13.5% of top-ranking content.
What does get penalised: scaled content abuse — producing content at volume with little value to manipulate rankings. That policy targets the behaviour, not the tool.
The distinction that predicts outcomes: not human versus AI, but whether the page offers something a summary can't replace.
What Google actually says
The clearest statement comes from Google's Search Central guidance on AI-generated content: the focus is on the quality of content rather than how it's produced — a principle Google describes as having guided its results for years.
Danny Sullivan put it more bluntly in 2023: "We focus on the quality of content, not how content is produced." That position has been restated repeatedly and remains in effect.
Two things worth noting about this:
It's not a grudging tolerance. Google isn't saying AI content is acceptable despite reservations. It's saying production method isn't a category its systems evaluate — which is consistent with the fact that Google has no reliable way to determine production method, and neither does anyone else.
It has a clear exception. Google's spam policies explicitly cover using automation, including AI, to generate content primarily to manipulate rankings. That's not an AI rule — it's a manipulation rule that predates AI and applies to hand-written spam equally.
What the data shows
The Ahrefs study is the most useful available, because it has a stated methodology and a large sample: 600,000 pages, scored for AI content, compared against ranking position.
The findings:
86.5% of top-ranking pages contained some AI-assisted content. AI involvement is now the norm rather than the exception at the top of results.
The correlation between AI content and ranking position was 0.011. For context, that's statistically indistinguishable from no relationship at all. AI use doesn't predict ranking in either direction.
Only ~13.5% of top-ranking pages were purely human-written. Which makes "AI content doesn't rank" straightforwardly false as a description of what's actually ranking.
One nuance worth keeping: some analyses suggest pages with minimal AI involvement correlate very slightly with the highest positions, and that fully AI-written pages rarely take position one. But the effect is weak, and it's confounded — the pages with the most human involvement also tend to be the ones with original data, real expertise, and genuine editorial investment. That's a quality signal wearing an authorship costume.
What actually gets penalised
The scaled content abuse policy is where the real risk sits, and it's frequently misread as an AI policy.
What it targets: producing many pages with little value for the primary purpose of manipulating search rankings.
What it explicitly doesn't prohibit: AI-generated content as such. The policy addresses content providing no real value regardless of how it was produced — hand-written thin content faces the same treatment.
Why AI-generated sites dominate penalty examples anyway: AI makes producing thin content at scale trivially cheap. The behaviour was always penalised; the tool made the behaviour affordable, so far more people do it.
Reports following the March 2026 core update described substantial traffic losses at sites publishing large volumes of AI-generated pages without editorial oversight. Worth reading that carefully: the common factor in those cases is volume without oversight, not AI. A site publishing 800 generic pages nobody needed would have had the same problem in 2019 with a content farm.
Can Google detect AI writing?
Probably to some degree, and it matters less than people assume.
The honest position: nobody outside Google knows what its systems can identify, and Google has no incentive to say. Claims about its detection capability overwhelmingly come from companies selling detection or humanizing tools, which is the least reliable possible source on this specific question.
What's observable: the signals that correlate with penalties — thin content, no original information, no expertise signals, published at volume — are all things Google has measured for years without needing to identify authorship at all.
Which reframes the question usefully. Google doesn't need to detect AI to penalise the content people are worried about. It needs to detect thin, unhelpful, unoriginal content — and it's been doing that since long before this was a question.
The practical implication: optimising to evade detection is the wrong project. It targets an unknown and possibly imaginary mechanism, and it distorts the writing. Optimising for genuine value targets the thing that's actually being measured.
The distinction that actually predicts outcomes
Not human versus AI. Replaceable versus not.
Content that struggles, regardless of who wrote it:
- Summarises publicly available information with nothing added
- Answers a question completely in a way an AI Overview also answers
- Exists because a keyword had volume, not because you had something to say
- Contains no first-hand experience, original data, or defensible position
Content that holds up, regardless of how it was drafted:
- Original data that exists nowhere else
- First-hand experience and specific situated examples
- A clear position argued rather than surveyed
- Genuine depth that a summary advertises rather than replaces
- Interactive tools that require arriving to use
The test: if someone read a perfect summary of this page, would they still want to visit it?
That question predicts performance far better than authorship does, and it works identically for human-written and AI-assisted content. The six formats that survive.
Why the myth persists
Worth naming, because it explains the volume of contradictory advice.
Two conflicted industries. AI detector and "humanizer" companies profit from the belief that AI content is risky and detectable. AI writing tool companies profit from the opposite. Between them they produce most of the content on this question.
A real correlation misread. Sites that got hit were publishing AI content — at volume, unedited, with nothing original in it. The AI was correlated with the penalty. The volume and thinness caused it.
And an intuition that feels right. It seems like it should matter who wrote something. But Google ranks pages, not authors, and it's never had a reliable way to determine authorship of anything.

If the answer is original data, first-hand experience, or a position you'd defend, the page will do fine regardless of how it was drafted.
If the answer is nothing, no amount of humanizing rescues it — because the problem was never that a machine wrote it. The problem is that it didn't need to exist.
